3 Copywriting Tips that Work

If you’re a total greenhorn to online marketing, then just know and accept that it’s excellent sales copy that will sell your products for you. No matter what you do, somewhere along the line your entire lifeblood depends on copy. However, it does take some time before you can actually write like a pro. It’s not the kind of writing you did in high school or college – for sure. There’s a lot to learn, remember, and you need tons of practice and some mechanism for feedback. So we’ll get you started with just a handful of copywriting tips you can learn.

There are way too many points to cover, but basically you always want to draw the reader into your copy and get him involved in it. The simple reason you want to do this is because the reader’s emotions become attached to what they are reading. What better way to invoke their curiosity about your product than to ask them questions? Questions help to slow the reader down and draw him into the copy, and they can be most effective in a subheadline.

But what you want to do is ask a question that is positive in nature, or rather has a ‘yes’ answer. It’s nothing like mind control or NLP, but it’s a technique to help put your reader in a more positive frame of mind.

Your sales copy can be long, but it shouldn’t be confusing. Copy that can be scanned is what you’re shooting for, too. Your reader should be able to give it a slow scan and get a gist of what you’re offering. It’s easy to make your copy scannable, and what you’ll do is write in shorter and simpler sentence styles plus shorter paragraph structure. Another effect you want to achieve is making good use of white space. Subheadings are to be used because they’ll help break things up, plus they’re great for organization. Think of a sub-heading as a (short) chapter heading. Each section, with sub-heading, builds on the previous and introduces the next section.

Effective use of benefit bullets are powerful and can actually close the sale if they’re well done. The way you write your bullets is they are short and serve to illustrate the benefits of your product. Response-pulling copy makes excellent use of bullets; they are easy to scan, easy to understand, and the reader will immediately know what they’re getting in the product. Besides that, keeping your copy organized will give it a neat, professional look and make it easy for the prospect to reach to a buying decision.

Copywriting is a difficult art that takes regular study and practice if you want to excel at it. Some copywriters who are paid quite a bit for their services are actually self-taught, and had no special training or even a marketing background. So don’t lose your focus and keep improving if you want to make a mark. When it comes down to it, good copywriting skills are the closest thing to having your computer print out money for you.
